Hello everyone!

I have something special to share with you this Father’s Day! It’s a new series by Puffin Books: Roald Dahl’s Board books with bite. This review is focused on the first two books in the series, Roald Dahl’s 1, 2, 3, which introduces toddlers to numbers, and Roald Dahl’s Opposites, which obviously shows children the difference between opposing words such as tall and short, using lift-the-flaps. As an added bonus, both books feature the Enormous Crocodile, the main character from Roald Dahl’s 1978 children’s book. The Crocodile is used as a search and find component in both books.

Considering the books are meant for toddlers, they are great! They are both great quality and can withstand being pulled apart, thrown, and can easily be wiped clean if something is spilled on them. (I would know, it was a great task trying to get the flaps in opposites to stay lifted for the pictures!). Moreover, the colours used are very bright. Speaking from experience seeing my niece’s interest in books, toddlers are captivated for longer by books that have bright colours.

In regards to the parents’ interest in the book, it is likely that a love for Roald Dahl books will be the deciding factor in buying them. In this regard, the Quentin Blake illustrations will inevitably make you feel nostalgic, and make you want to reread some classic Roald Dahl books yourself!

The only reason I gave the books a 4-star rating and not 5, is because I expected more Roald Dahl characters to make an appearance. As much as I adore the style of the board books, the Enormous Crocodile is not the main point of the books, and I can’t help but feel a little as if he was added to justify the ‘Roald Dahl’ part in the titles of the books. So in future instalments of this series, I’d like to see Roald Dahl characters play a bigger part!
